BC Hydro Home Renovation Bonus Rebates
Eligible homeowners who complete multiple qualifying upgrades may be able to receive additional bonus rebates on top of individual home renovation incentives. Bonus eligibility depends on the number and type of qualifying upgrades completed and, for certain bonus structures, may depend on measured improvements in overall home energy performance. Heat pumps and heat pump water heaters can count as bonus-eligible upgrades when current program requirements are met.
Bonus rebates are separate from individual upgrade rebates and have their own eligibility requirements.
Depending on the current program, homeowners may qualify for an additional bonus when multiple eligible energy-efficiency upgrades are completed.
Before planning upgrades specifically to qualify for a bonus:
• Confirm which upgrades currently count toward the bonus. • Confirm whether the upgrades must be completed within a specific time period. • Check whether pre- and post-upgrade EnerGuide evaluations are required. • Keep invoices, contractor documentation and program confirmation for every qualifying upgrade. • Confirm that each individual upgrade also meets its own rebate requirements. • Verify the current bonus amount and application deadline before beginning work.
A homeowner should not assume that completing several upgrades automatically qualifies for the maximum bonus.
Eligibility
To qualify for a BC Hydro Home Renovation Bonus, the home and each individual upgrade must meet the Home Renovation Rebate Program's general and upgrade-specific eligibility requirements.
Two Upgrade Bonus: • Complete at least two bonus-eligible upgrades. • The two eligible upgrades must be completed within 18 months of each other. • If applying after both upgrades are complete, submit the bonus application within six months of the invoice date of the second eligible upgrade. • The Two Upgrade Bonus is $300. • Only one Two Upgrade Bonus or Home Energy Improvement Bonus can be claimed per home.
Home Energy Improvement Bonus: • Complete a pre-upgrade EnerGuide home evaluation with a program-qualified energy advisor. • Complete at least three bonus-eligible upgrades within 18 months of the pre-upgrade evaluation. • Complete a post-upgrade EnerGuide home evaluation. • Submit the bonus application within six months of the post-upgrade EnerGuide evaluation. • The bonus is based on the percentage gigajoule improvement shown in the EnerGuide report, with a minimum of $750 and a maximum of $2,000.
Eligible upgrades can include qualifying insulation, windows and doors, primary space-heating systems such as heat pumps, qualifying water-heating systems, and certain combined space-and-water heating systems.
Individual upgrades must also satisfy their own product, contractor, installation and application requirements. Income-qualified households should review the CleanBC Better Homes Energy Savings Program instead, as it cannot be combined with the standard Home Renovation Rebate Program.
