Sizing beats brand
An oversized system short-cycles — it blasts, shuts off, and never runs long enough to dehumidify or filter your air, while wearing out its compressor early. That's why every Coreline quote starts with a room-by-room heat-loss calculation, not the nameplate on your old unit.
What the ratings mean
AFUE is how much of your gas becomes heat — 96% AFUE means 4% goes up the flue. SEER2 rates cooling efficiency, HSPF2 rates heat pump heating. Higher is better, but installation quality moves real-world performance more than the label does.
Heat pumps and defrost
Below about 3°C an outdoor coil frosts up, and a heat pump runs a short defrost cycle — steam rising off the unit is normal, not a fault. The cold-climate models Coreline installs hold full heating output to −15°C and keep working to −25°C.
Filters and smoke season
A MERV-13 filter captures the fine wildfire-smoke particles a builder-grade filter misses, and a heat-recovery ventilator brings in fresh air without throwing away your heat. Change filters every three months — more often in August.

How much does a heat pump cost in Vancouver?
Every house is different — size, ducting, and the system you choose all move the number. After the free assessment you get one fixed quote, and it doesn't change.
Do heat pumps actually work in BC winters?
The cold-climate units we install are rated to −25°C and run at full heating capacity through a typical Vancouver snap. Thousands are running on the North Shore right now. A backup stage covers the once-a-decade outlier.
How long does installation take?
Most single-system swaps finish in one day; a full duct-and-system retrofit runs two to three. The schedule is confirmed in your quote, and our crews don't leave jobs half-open over a weekend.
Do you handle water heaters and boilers too?
Yes — tankless water heaters, storage tanks, and boilers are core work for us: installation, repair, and annual service, all under the same one-number quote.
Will you service a system someone else installed?
Yes — all makes, all ages. If it's worth repairing we'll repair it; if it isn't, we'll show you the math before recommending anything bigger.
What size heat pump does my house need?
Most Metro Vancouver homes land between 1.5 and 4 tons — but the honest answer comes from a heat-loss calculation, not square footage. Windows, insulation, and ducting can swing the number by a full ton. Oversizing is the most common mistake we're called to correct.
How often should I service my system?
Once a year for furnaces, boilers, and heat pumps — ideally before their heavy season — plus a filter change every three months. Annual service keeps manufacturer warranties valid and catches the failing part before it becomes the no-heat call.
Can I keep my furnace and add a heat pump?
Yes — that's a hybrid, or dual-fuel, setup. The heat pump carries most of the year at higher efficiency, and the furnace takes over on the coldest nights. It's a practical retrofit path for older Vancouver homes with a newer furnace.
What if my heat dies at 2 a.m.?
